Lightning

Postby hemingray » Sun Aug 02, 2009 9:41 pm

It doesn't look it from here in the west foothills, but I guess there has been a significant amount of lightning over the past few days.

Check out this article. Be sure to click on the thumbnail for a picture taken from Haypress Valley (up near Yuba Pass). Awesome!

We were at Boca on Mon, Tue, Wed and Thu. Tuesday night was a spectacular show! Wed we got caught in a nasty hail storm while riding the Bear Valley Loop. Temp dropped 30 degrees easily and hail the size of marbles was pelting the crap out of us.

From out west, the clouds appear to dissipate around sunset and move northeast. Interesting that you saw so much activity!

Zowie! That sucks. Hail stones that big hurt like heck when they hit you, especially if you have bare skin exposed.

More to come, sounds like. Hope it doesn't affect the upcoming weekend ride! Interesting change from the crest for the lightning.

The National Weather Service has issued Red Flag Warnings for Wednesday (8/8/2009) afternoon and evening: A very unusual strong low pressure area off the coast of northern California will begin to move close to the northern California coastline on Wednesday. The low will destabilize the atmosphere bringing with it the potential for numerous lightning strikes to occur through Thursday. The middle and lower elevations are expected to have a higher potential for dry lightning strikes than the higher elevations.

Well, we were riding thru that canyon area by Bear Valley, where the swamp/creek runs thru and the cows are plentiful, I had shorts and t-shirt on and it was about 55 degrees. At one point, I hit 55.7 MPH according to the GPS trying to get out of the weather. So yes, they hurt at first, then when you are sufficiently numb from the cold, you don't feel anything.
