First Ride Of The Season
I headed out this morning to check out the snow conditions. I rode from the Little Truckee Summit staging area, up Treasure Mountain Road (FS 05) to F2 15 and started climbing toward Bonta Saddle (the junction with FS 12 that runs all the way to Yuba Pass). I made it up to 7300', just a half mile from Bonta Saddle when I hit solid snow on the road:
Up until that point it had been no problem, just a few snow drifts here and there that I was able to punch through easily. I didn't want to chance going any further since it is all uphill and I was alone, so I turned around and zipped back down to Little Truckee Summit. I rode across Hwy 89, past Bear Valley OHV, and up to Sardine Peak. At virtually the same spot where Angelo was following too close in the snow, rear-ended me,and busted out my taillight last year ( ) I ran into solid snow at around 7800':
Bear Valley OHV looked to be completely melted out with just a few snow patches on the NE-facing slopes up above Lemon Canyon Road. Here is the sign on Fibreboard Road (FS 07) at Little Truckee Summit, apparently it is only as far as Webber Lake.
67 miles total, it was nice to get back in the saddle again.

Re: First Ride Of The Season
Wow - we were all thinking July for a thaw at the Grizzly Den. Lotta snow still around eh! It's amazing.
For the next one, I can't decide whether I want to chain saw my way around Red Star Ridge or check out my beloved FR-19 and see how far I can get. It's been roasty-toasty on this side of the hill and I can see the white disappearing from the mountains that I can see from here on the I-80 corridor. Or maybe your area - I like that area a lot.

Re: First Ride Of The Season
Yeah, we've had a bunch of hot days and that seems to have accelerated the melting/riding schedule.
If you come up this way, it sure wouldn't hurt to have a chain saw. On my way back down Treasure Mountain Road, I made a point of exploring all of the side roads that I hadn't bothered with before. Some were blocked by snow but a whole bunch were blocked by trees. Being the lazy guy that I am, I turned around and am now waiting for a less-lazy-guy like you to come along and cut them out of the way for the next time I hit that area.

Well, maybe you can just waypoint them all for me and then I can come up and clear it all up for you and then you can go back and ride them!

Check your E-mail inbox and let me know when you've cleared all six out of my way.hemingray wrote:Well, maybe you can just waypoint them all for me and then I can come up and clear it all up for you and then you can go back and ride them!
Give it a few more weeks for the rest of the snow to melt, then I'm up for a ride to Gold Lake any time. It was 103 miles round-trip from Little Truckee Summit when I did it the first time by myself. When I tried to do it again, I made the mistake of bringing along a bunch of guys who ride Polaris quads, and well... didn't make it that time.EigerMike wrote:very nice GG we couldnt get pass 5300ft glad your out and about what about heading over to gold lake area this year?
