Need some help replacing a torn CV boot, a little confusion?
I've been doing some searching on various websites and I'm confused.
Either the cv pulls apart or theres a little clip in there that needs spread apart?
I've had the thing torn apart twice already and no luck, any help would be awesome, thanks a lot!

You got the clip (ring) that seals the boot around the axel? You have to squeeze it (supposed to use a special tool, but you can improvise) to unlock it.

There's 2 clips (rings). Large one and small one. Getting them back on without the tool...isn't easy. The clips are important, as they seal it to keep the water out.
Perhaps someone else has a "technique" to do it. Jack? Bill?

I know exactly what you're talking about and the service manual says to jsut give it a swift yank and it comes apart. OK, that IS true, but those CV balls come out too and bounce all over the place. Be very careful.
The 'clip' you're referring to is just a ring that fits in a machined groove inside the greasy mess. You are better off having two people to put it back together once you get it apart. One to hold the clip open and one to smack the end of the shaft so that it settles in place and the clip can seat in the machined groove. It's not easy and you probably will curse, but having that second person there (or a third arm growing out of your chest) is KEY.
I used regular snap ring pliers when I did Ken's (see above poster) and my wife used a soft faced dead blow hammer to smack the shaft into place.

It's a harder pull to get it out...than you imagine, too.Kendo wrote:I know exactly what you're talking about and the service manual says to jsut give it a swift yank and it comes apart.

I have always dug out the grease and spread the clip to remove the axel from the CVKendo wrote:True, jsut think of it as a slide hammer, it will come apart, and you WILL think you have broken something. Again, the factory service manual says to do it that way so it must be OK.
You just need reverse snap ring pliers.

I don't have any reverse snap ring pliers, always wanted some though, might be a reason to pick some up.MrBill wrote:I have always dug out the grease and spread the clip to remove the axel from the CVKendo wrote:True, jsut think of it as a slide hammer, it will come apart, and you WILL think you have broken something. Also seems like theres not much room in there for pliers?
So I guess I might not have to take apart the universal? On another forum someone mentioned to take it apart so I can stick it in a vise and get the CV apart.

Yeah, I took it out completely and put it in the vise to work on it. I still needed the extra hand to get it back together, because, as Bill mentioned, you still have to hold the clip open, the shaft and a hammer to get it all back together.
The snap ring pliers are key and if you can get some with an extended reach, it would make life that much easier. I used 'regular' ones and it was a PITA.
