Need a lift for 27" tires???
I've read about many of you putting on 27" tires on your Sportsmans, but haven't read about any of you doing anything extra to your suspension to make room in the wheel-wells for them. They've gotta rub to some extent. My brother in law put 26" Bighorns on his 700 and they rub his fender-wells. Of course he's running the stock rims. Now, what's the deal? I'm anxious to hear, as I shall be purchasing my new set of meats this fall.
Thanks,
Tom

Larry that rides with us runs 27" on ITP steel rims. I run 26" on ITP steel.
Mine rub, His rub.
Most of the riding we do is rock crawling and at low speeds, so a little ribbing is OK. If you are going to be running fast trails you may want to get a 2" lift from Hylifter.http://www.highlifter.com/store/ATV-Lift-Kits.html
$109.00 for a Polaris full kit is not to bad.

Steve runs 27's on his 800 EFI and does nothave an issue with the rubbing on the wheel wells. The 2005 models gave a little more room in the fenders for bigger tires. He did have to get some wheel spacers though as they were rubbing on the suspension a little, butother than that, no issues.

I have a 2002, with 26". Interestingly...my LEFT FRONT rubs on compression....but my right doesn't.
Larry runs 27" on his...2001(??). He put aftermarket fender flares on....they're cut and more flat out.

Yeah...My brother-in-law shaved his fender/flare down to get an extra 1/2 to 3/4 inch of clearance on the front/rear, which stopped his rubbing...
I've decided, however, to install a lift...however, I'm more inclined to look for heavier springs for the front, rather than the spacers which come w/the HiLifter set.
Any suggestions?

You'll also notice a powerloss going from 26 to 27. The 800 can overcome it....but the 7 can't.

The other issue...adding the lift....is raising the CG. If you raise the CG, I would consider spacers to widen the stance.

26's it is...Thanks!
How about a Gorilla Lift kit...now that's clearance!
About the power loss and the 7 not being able to overcome it (27"tires)...I just can't imagine there's THAT much power difference between the 7 and 8...I'm thinkin' (out loud) that w/a better than stock exhaust, and factory snorkel removed and replaced w/something w/more flow, that the 7 would smoke a stock 8. Am I off my rocker here???
Speaking of which, has anyone here put the White Brothers exhaust on their 700 EFI? What's the verdict?

There is between a 700 carb and an 800 EFI. It's like a 500 to a 700. Steve and I "raced" just to check it out. We both had 26". Mine were 589's and his were BALD!rangertom wrote:About the power loss and the 7 not being able to overcome it (27"tires)...I just can't imagine there's THAT much power difference between the 7 and 8...
Off the line...1 ATV length, the 800 was already passed and 10 feet in front of me in about 30 feet.
Oh...and did I mention the 800 does a wheelie in High gear?

Shoot, Ken! Mine would in High too if I had the High performance clutch kit in it...It's got plenty of Juice to do it, if it'd hook up...I can do it in good grass! I would like to race an 800 after I add those few mods...only problem is that'll be another $1000!

(POWER ROBBING) the weight of larger tires is amazining I have wimpy stock 25's on my brute and have been looking at larger tires the mudlights seem to be a good choice in the 26'' I think they are about 7 to 9 lbs more per tire. thats adding wt. in the wrong place where the engine has to spin them.

And at 1,000, you now have an 800.
My point is.....out of the box...The 800 easily does a wheelie. EASILY.
BTW. As per Dave's post about tire weight.
Here's the deal.
If you have a 1,000 lb ATV, Car, Dragster...basically anything with wheels.
If you reduce 1LB from a non-moving part (ie: take out a cushion) you gain a 1:1 improvement in HP.
If you reduce 1LB from a moving WHEEL part (tire, rim, etc) you gain a 1:5 improvment in HP
If you reduce 1LB from a moving engine part, you gain a 1:15 improvement in HP.
The latter, explains why NASCAR and F1 spend millions on Engine Development.
So...in the case of ADDING weight to the tire....and 1LB addition is a 1:5 REDUCTION in HP. So, start adding 10lbs to each wheel....do the math. It's a HP wiper Outer.
