My Latest Bang-Bang Toy

Postby GrizzlyGuy » Mon Oct 18, 2010 6:25 pm

It is a S&W M&P 15-22 MOE FDE. MOE= Magpul Original Equipment, FDE= Flat Dark Earth:

I added a rail mount sling adapter to the front and attached a Blackhawk 2-point sling. The sights flip down and the stock retracts for carrying. The rifle is super-easy to field strip, clean and lube (which I did this morning). I wanted to hop on the Grizzly and sight it in today, but found out that you need a special tool to adjust elevation on the front sight, and the $5 tool is not provided with the rifle. #-o

Oh well, Amazon has the tool and it will be here in a few days. :)

I also have a red dot sight and riser for it, but I want to see how it does with the MBUS sights first. The red dot sight + riser would add about a pound of weight. I love how light this gun is so I may or may not add the red dot. I've got about 9,500 rounds of ammo in this caliber (.22 LR) and 5,000 of those rounds are even on the 'approved ammo list' in the manual. So, I think I'm good to go for a long time on the "gas" front. :D

It would take more than 9500 rounds of 22 cal to take over Barbados. :)

LOL! That's right, 22 LR isn't real effective for taking over countries. But I do have a couple thousand rounds of another rifle caliber that would work a little better for that. It was used effectively in WW II by guys like my dad to take back countries from the Japanese. Not that I have any interest at all in taking over (or taking back) countries...

I would love to get my hands on that thing and do some measuring on that lower receiver to see if I can machine one. :)

I have made one for 223 already, but I wanna try my hand at a 22 and maybe a 9mm lower.

Damn Kendo, is there anything in this world that you can't fix or fab? You're exactly the kind of guy I'd want around if Bin Laden ever managed to get a nuke, do an EMP attack, zap the grid and the electronic gadgets, and send us all back to 19th century technology (the plausible story in One Second After). You fix and fab, and I'll hunt, cook and do your laundry. Deal? :P

Nice! I thought it was verboten in the communist country of California (CCC) to own such a firearm. I was also under the impression that 10 round magazines were maximum capacity by law in CA?

My bro (who lives in Vacaville) has me source him magazines, etc..

Rimfire is the difference. They "allow" higher cap magazines for rimfire cartridges.

Yeah, the only reason it is legal is because .22's are rimfire. If it was centerfire, it could still be legal, but you'd need a bullet button on the mag well so that technically the magazine becomes "fixed".

The mag is actually a 10-rounder. They just pin them off like the 10/30 AR mags so that they look cool. The rifle usually comes with a 25-rounder, but I had the guy swap it with a CA-legal 10 rounder (and toss in 5 more spares) before he shipped it out here. Large capacity magazines are legal to possess, but as of 1/1/2000 it became illegal to import or manufacture new ones. :(

Detachable magazines for rimfire guns are actually limited to 10 rounds as well. The exception is for .22's with tube magazines. From 12020 PC:
(25) As used in this section, "large-capacity magazine" means any
ammunition feeding device with the capacity to accept more than 10
rounds, but shall not be construed to include any of the following:
(A) A feeding device that has been permanently altered so that it
cannot accommodate more than 10 rounds.
(B) A .22 caliber tube ammunition feeding device.
(C) A tubular magazine that is contained in a lever-action
firearm.
